| Firefighters from Bay District Volunteer Fire Department and surrounding mutual aid companies responded Sunday evening to a reported structure fire in the 46000 block of Rogers Drive in Lexington Park.
The incident was dispatched on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at approximately 5:00 p.m., after 911 callers reported fire and smoke inside a closet area of a two-story townhome. Callers advised that the home was filling with smoke and that the occupants were evacuating.
Bay District Volunteer Fire Department responded with Engine 32, Squad 3, Truck 3, and Tower 9. Engine 32 arrived in under one minute from dispatch and found smoke showing from the front of a middle-of-the-row townhome. Firefighters established operations on Side A of the residence and quickly began an interior attack.
All occupants were able to safely escape before firefighters entered the home. Residents advised crews that multiple dogs were still inside the residence.
Firefighters advanced into the townhome and located fire involving the furnace area on the first floor, with slight extension nearby. Crews worked quickly to extinguish the fire, check for extension, and ventilate smoke from the residence. The fire was brought under control in less than 15 minutes.
During the operation, firefighters safely removed three dogs from the home. No injuries were reported to residents, firefighters, or pets.
Personnel from NAS Patuxent River, Hollywood, and Second District assisted Bay District crews at the scene. Additional units staged nearby to ensure access through the residential neighborhood and to support operations as needed. Firefighters remained on the scene for more than 45 minutes completing overhaul, securing utilities, and confirming there was no further fire extension.
The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the displaced residents.
