By Bay District Volunteers
October 20, 2024

On the evening of Saturday, October 19, 2024, at approximately 10:07 p.m., Maryland State Police responded to a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Patuxent Beach Road and South Patuxent Beach Road in California, Maryland. The incident involved two vehicles, with both drivers confirming no injuries. An accident report was promptly filed.

However, at 10:59 p.m., while officers and bystanders waited for tow trucks, the situation took a tragic turn. The driver of one of the vehicles, for reasons still under investigation, left the safety of the roadside and entered the travel lanes on foot, where they were struck by a passing vehicle.

Emergency services were quickly mobilized. Bay District Station 9 and surrounding EMS companies were alerted, with Rescue Engine 92 and Chief 9B (D. Martoni) responding to assist with patient care and traffic control. A Maryland State Trooper on the scene immediately initiated life-saving measures, performing CPR until EMS personnel arrived.

Maryland State Police Helicopter Trooper 7 was placed on standby. The pedestrian was transported by Emergency Medical Technicians to Hollywood, Maryland, where they were airlifted to a trauma center with life-threatening injuries.
