Silo Rescue in Hollywood

By Bay District Volunteers
September 5, 2024

On the evening of Thursday, September 5, 2024, at approximately 9:26 p.m., Bay District Tower 9 and surrounding units responded to a reported technical rescue at Chaney Enterprises, located on Airport View Drive in Hollywood, Maryland.

The 911 call reported an employee who had last been seen atop a silo on the worksite and had been missing for over an hour. Concerns grew after the employee’s vehicle was found unoccupied in the parking lot, raising fears that the individual may have been inside the silo.

Responding units included firefighters from the Hollywood, Bay District, and Solomons Volunteer Fire Departments, along with Maryland State Police Troopers from the Leonardtown Barrack and Aviation Command. Trooper 7, a helicopter unit returning from a prior mission, also joined the search effort.

Upon arrival, Trooper 7 flew over the site and identified an unresponsive individual located at the top of the silo. Firefighters used specialized equipment, including Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department’s Ladder Truck 7 and Bay District Tower 9, to reach the individual. Sadly, the adult male was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Crews spent over two hours working to recover the victim from the silo. The Maryland State Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident, and the cause of death is still under investigation.

Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased during this difficult time.
