By Bay District Volunteers
April 6, 2024

In the early hours of Saturday, April 6, 2024, Squad 3 (BDVFD), Squad 6 (SDVFDRS) and EMS resources responded to a distressing scene at the Holy Face Church in Callaway. At approximately 1:36 a.m., authorities were alerted to a serious motor vehicle collision involving a pickup truck crashing into the rear of the building, resulting in entrapment of the vehicle's operator.

Initially reported as occurring at the nearby Little Flower School, responders quickly redirected their efforts to the correct location, where they found the pickup truck suspended in the air, resting precariously on the rear basement access stairs with the driver trapped inside.

With swift and coordinated efforts, 19 firefighters from Bay District and Valley Lee Volunteer Fire Departments worked tirelessly to extricate the victim from the wreckage, successfully completing the rescue operation in under 20 minutes.

The severity of the situation necessitated the involvement of Maryland State Police, who promptly dispatched Trooper 7, a medical helicopter, to the scene. The patient was airlifted to an area trauma center due to life-threatening injuries.

This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safe driving practices. As we reflect on this alarming event, we urge all motorists to prioritize caution and responsibility while behind the wheel. Whether it's adhering to speed limits, avoiding distractions, or refraining from driving under the influence, every decision made on the road can have profound consequences.

In the interest of public safety, let us collectively commit to fostering a culture of vigilant and responsible driving. Together, we can strive to prevent tragedies like this from occurring in our communities.
