January 14, 2019

Over the course of the weekend, as Southern Maryland was experiencing a high level of winter weather, Bay District Volunteers were called to several fires.

On Friday, January 11, 2019 at 16:55 hours, Bay District Stations 9 and 3, NDW Patuxent River Co 13, Hollywood Co 7, and Leonardtown Co 1 were alerted Mutual Aid to Calvert County for the reported Airplane Crash in the Chesapeake Ranch Estates. Engine 92 (Lt Harrison), Safety 9 (Adams), Tanker 34 (Capt. Bruner) Chief 3A (Burroughs), and Chief 3 (Wahrenbrock) all responded shortly after dispatch with a total of 12 volunteers. While responding, units were advised of several explosions at the scene. Units arrived and staged while units from Solomon’s VRSFD further investigated the incident. The incident was later scaled back to units from Solomon’s VRSFD, St Leonard VFD, and Bay District Engine 92. Further investigation identified a RV that had been driven down an embankment and came to rest at the bottom of a ravine. While traveling down the embankment, the RV struck a residential propane tank which caused the noted explosions and smoke that could be seen for miles. The patient was safely assisted by bystanders prior to Fire and EMS arrival. Engine 92 remained on the scene for 2 hours assisting units before returning in service.

On Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 03:35 hours, Bay District Station 9 and Hollywood Co 7 were alerted Mutual Aid to Calvert County for a reported Structure Fire. Engine 92 (Lt Harrison) and Safety 9 (Adams) immediately responded with 5 volunteers. Engine 92 arrived on the scene and completed Water Supply for units from Solomon’s VRSFD, St Leonard VFD, and Prince Frederick VFD operating on the scene. On Engine 92 arrival, the structure had collapsed and only Exterior fireground operations were being performed. Engine 92 assisted units with extinguishment for 90 minutes before returning in service.

On Monday, January 14, 2019 at 01:57 hours, Bay District Stations 3 and 9, Second District VRSFD Co 6, NDW Patuxent River Co 13, Leonardtown VFD Co 1, Ridge VFD Co 4, and Seventh District VFD Co 5 were alerted to Point Lookout Rd in Callaway for a Structure Fire. Tanker 34, Truck 3, Engine 92 (Lt Harrison), and Tower 9 (Safety 9 Adams) responded with 17 volunteers. Tanker 34 and Truck 3 were first to arrive finding 3 Dump Trucks and a Gradall on fire. Engine 92 arrived and assisted units on scene while Engine 61 established Water Supply. All units operated on scene for 3 hours as they extinguished any remaining fire and preforming overhaul of the effected vehicles.
