By Fire Sergeant John Thomas
March 30, 2012

Bay District Volunteers were alerted to area box 6-01 for the chimney fire. Engine 33 (Sgt. Dean), Truck 3 (Sgt. Thomas), and Chief 3 (Downs) responded with thirteen volunteers. Safety 5 arrived on scene with a confirmed working chimney fire and advised Chief 3 that the fire had extended to the cockloft. Chief 3 upgraded the assignment to the working commercial building fire alerting stations 9 (California), 7 (Hollywood), and 1 (Leonardtown). Engine 33 assumed first due responsibilities lying out and reporting to side Alpha. Engine 33's crew then stretched a 400 foot inch and three quarter hand line and made an aggressive interior attack. As reported crews found fire conditions in the cockloft. Truck 3 set up on alpha bravo corner and placed their 100 foot aerial in service along with numerous ground ladders and secured the utilities to the building. Truck 3's crew then made entry to the restaurant and started opening up for the engine company. Truck 3's tillerman went to the roof and completed vertical ventilation then reported and crews working on the interior. Engine 33's crew worked with truck 3 on initiating an aggressive attack on the fire and had it under control within twenty minutes. Chief 3 assumed the interior command. Engine 61 arrived on scene and positioned themselves on side alpha. Crews worked together and made quick work on the fire and began overhaul operations. The box assignment was scaled back and units were placed in service.
